Textile function as a non-verbal form of communication and when decorated, as protective good luck charms. Motif, colour and composition signify an individual’s group identity and occupation and very often, social status.

a very fine example of beautifully decorated textile in Aari embroidery-

something about Aari embroidery-

Aari embroidery done by the Mochi (cobbler) community is essentially a chain stitch, but done by a hook which is an adaptable of the cobbler’s tool. This is a very delicate and floral style of embroidery. All of the figures and motifs used can be made to be highly representational, using subtle gradation of colour.
